Paediatric Physiotherapy For Cerebral Palsy
By Alana Gardini, Paediatric Physiotherapist
Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most prevalent physical disabilities in childhood, and one of the most common conditions we see as paediatric physiotherapists. Physiotherapy for CP focuses on flexibility, strength, coordination, and function, to help your child reach their full physical potential.
What is CP?
CP is a physical disability that affects movement and posture, caused by damage to the developing brain during pregnancy or in the first 2 years of life. It is a permanent condition, and although it doesn’t worsen over time, it does change as the child’s body grows.
Disability caused by CP can range from mild to severe. A child who is mildly affected, for example, may present with weakness in one hand or a slight limp. At the other end of the scale, a severely affected child can have minimal voluntary movement and be unable to speak or eat on their own.
How We Treat CP
We are experts in early intervention for children with CP, with over 25 years of combined experience. We are informed by the latest research in CP and neuroplasticity, and know how to achieve long lasting results.
Treatment may involve:
- Early motor intervention
- Neuro-developmental therapy
- Constraint-induced movement therapy (cimt)
- Strength, flexibility, balance and coordination programs
- Hydrotherapy
- Specialist gym programs at a local children’s gym (in association with My First Gym)
- Treadmill training
- Intensive programs
- Parent training
- Ankle foot orthoses prescription
- Mobility equipment prescription
- Postural support equipment prescription
- Group therapy
- Massage for pain and movement
A Collaborative Approach
We work closely with the local CP support networks to ensure collaborative care for our patients. We communicate with hospital teams, orthotists and school therapists. We can discuss treatment plans with other therapists, including speech pathologists and occupational therapists. We work with the local NDIS Early Intervention Teams and are experienced in NDIS equipment applications and report writing.
It’s Our Passion
Working with children with Cerebral Palsy is one of our greatest passions and we look forward to meeting with you and your child. We are here to help.
